A BRIEF HISTORY OF NNEWI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, (NCCIMA) was established in 1987, to cover Commercial and Industrial activities in the then Nnewi North and South Local Government Areas in a coordinated and organized way. Over the years the Chamber has taken some bold steps to represent the business organizations in the area in Government circles and Trade Missions both at home and abroad. The Chamber has been organizing Trade Fairs locally, and Trade Missions abroad to bring the many manufacturers and producers of goods and services in Nnewi face to face with buyers and potential investors.

The Pioneer President of the Chamber was late Prof. (Engr.) Sam Chukwujekwu. He was succeeded by Chief (Dr.) Cletus M. Ibeto, who in 1997 handed the leadership of the Chamber over to Chief Sir. (Dr.) A. C. Okafor, followed by Chief (Dr.) Ajulu Uzodike, Chief Sir. (Engr.) Emeka G. Nzewi, Prince Dr. Emeka A. Ayabazu, Mr. Humphrey A. Ngonadi, Engr. Linus Ilozue who handed over to the present President –. Mr. Ifeanyi Uzodike of Cutix plc

The emergence of Nnewi Auto Industrial Cluster is a spontaneous development arising mainly from historical background.

Down the long corridor of ages, people of Nnewi and environs have been great sojourners to be seen in distant locations all over Nigeria and the whole world. In these places they operate as traders, technicians, Office workers, transporters etc. After the

Civil war (1967 – 1970), their losses in properties and wealth taught them a rather harsh lesson that what they looked for outside could be realized at home.

Without a formal meeting, a great many of them opted to stay home and apply the same gifts, talent and industry which made them prosperous abroad in developing a trade centre at home. The rewarding result is now the great Nnewi market formally famous only for motor spare parts, but now a massive shopping centre where almost anything can be bought or sold. This revolution did not begin and end with buying and selling; it branched off to the establishment of industries. The reward has been that the whole of Area of Nnewi, which comprises Nnewi North and South and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas, is dotted with industries and many more are in the pipelines. Spanning Nnewi, Ichi, Ukpor, Ozubulu, Oraifite, Ekwulu – mili, Amichi, Ezinifite and other satellite towns, one sees towering factory chimnies and almost countless number of custom made buildings where equally countless number of products are manufactured. The is currently putting together a compendium of commercial and industrial activities in and around Nnewi. The COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL BUZINESS ACTIVITIES IN NNEWI, ANAMBRA STATE,NIGERIA  is  a bold attempt by NNEWI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, INDUSTRY, MINES AND AGRICULTURE, to open the windows of this emergent “Korea” and “Japan” and the new industrial Mecca of Nigeria, to Nigeria and the world over.
